Walden University Establishes Educational Alliance with the Good Samaritan Hospital of Maryland

Walden University, an accredited online distance-learning institution, is forming an alliance with the Good Samaritan Hospital of Maryland. The two organizations are working together to help hospital employees who want to work toward a Master of Science degree in Nursing from Walden University. The partnership between Walden and Good Samaritan is in response to the drastic nursing shortage sweeping the country.
“Good Samaritan is delighted to be in partnership with Walden University,” said Joanne Eich, education specialist at Good Samaritan Hospital. “In today’s rapidly changing health care environment, professional advancement is a must do for our R.N. staff, and they have long been asking us to find them a program that meets the needs of busy, working nurses.
“The online format allows the student more flexibility and support than most traditional advanced degree programs, and the Walden nursing courses are comprehensive, challenging and pertinent.”
There are many reasons why the shortage of qualified nurses has become so pronounced. Patient care is becoming more complex, and the elderly population is larger than ever. There will actually be a shortage of more than 1 million nurses by 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many eligible candidates are also being denied access to nursing programs, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. In fact, 32,797 eligible candidates were denied access to nursing programs in the 2004-2005 academic year.
Walden University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, a national accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. Walden University’s nursing program was designed to address the current and continuing needs of the nursing profession for working students. Walden’s Master of Science. Program in nursing currently enrolls more than 1,700 nurses with distance education courses that fit into their full-time professional schedules.
